August 8th officially began Crayfish season in Sweden. This farewell to summer party has been going on for centuries to celebrate the summer weather outdoors with funny hats, bibs, and crayfish paper lanterns. Every family has their crayfish catching stories but nowadays it is more common to just stop by the market and choose Turkish, Chinese, or American crayfish for your feast.

On the Island of Gotland is one of the few places where there are still native crayfish to be caught. Our own Per Svangren shared some photos of his crayfish feast along with his daughter Signe. Along with crayfish boiled in dillwater there is also toasted bread, one or two glasses of schnapps and a lot of slurping. All that’s left is a mountain of crayfish carnage but boy it was sure tasty.
